About the project

The historic Melrose Branch Library was constructed under the Carnegie Library Program in 1916. Its distinctive architectural style, as well as the quality of construction, has earned the building local landmark status. BBI Construction was retained to seismically strengthen the 7,820 sq. ft. two-story, concrete and wood framed building. As part of the project, ADA requirements were addressed, which included the addition of an elevator and a unisex toilet.

The project included installation of steel bracing with columns supporting the existing concrete upper floor joists, shear wall, new roof diaphragm, and restoration of historical architectural details. In addition, work included the installation of a new boiler/hydronic HVAC system. Funding was provided by the City of Oakland capital improvement funds and Measure I municipal bonds. Work was done on a congested urban site with restricted hours due to proximity to a residential neighborhood and school.
